Weekly Covid deaths have fallen again in England and Wales by 14 per cent to just 84 — the lowest figure recorded since September last year.

Data released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) today show the number of fatalities registered with Covid on the death certificate in the week ending June 11 fell to its lowest level since before the second lockdown was introduced.

There were 83 deaths in England and just one in Wales, with Covid accounting for 0.8 per cent of all deaths in the country — down from 98 (1.26 per cent) last week.

And the figures also showed more than a third of all councils across the two nations have not suffered a fatality since April.

But Covid deaths lag behind infections by about a fortnight, so the current low levels have yet to reflect the surge in cases caused by the Indian variant over the last two weeks. Boris Johnson's June 21 'Freedom Day' was delayed by four weeks due to concerns around the uptick in cases.

Scientists are divided on how much the increase in cases will affect death figures — with most of the vulnerable population now double-jabbed and 81.9 per cent of the country now having at least one vaccine — but the increase in hospitalisations also seen suggests some increase in deaths is inevitable.
