Sydneysiders in the midst of a two week lockdown in which they are directed to stay-at-home unless essential to leave claim they are being fined for parking their cars outside their house.

Both Sydney and Melbourne in 2020 lockdowns took a flexible approach to parking fines by relaxing the rules around green signed parking metre zones while keeping red 'no stopping' restrictions.

This hasn't been the case in some Sydney LGAs this week with parking inspectors out in force in the CBD, North Sydney, Surry Hills, and Bondi despite councils telling them to use their discretion.

Locals in the iconic beach precinct of Bondi have said finding somewhere to park while staying at home has become an increasingly big problem.

'This is a big issue in Bondi at the moment where I live... parking is already tough,' one woman told news.com.au

The resident explained parking in the exclusive suburb revolves around people moving their cars when they drive to work and the 'premise that people are moving about the city'.

She even claimed she had to leave her house, against NSW Health advice, to avoid getting a ticket.

'I have to sometimes park in the two-hour spots near my house and move my car every two hours to avoid a fine.'

Waverley Council - which includes Bondi - told Daily Mail Australia they would continue to enforce restriction even on green zoned areas.

'Parking zones are in place for the benefit of local businesses, residents and those using our parks and beaches,' it said.

'Council has enforcement staff on duty and we ask residents and visitors to adhere to parking restrictions for the benefit of all.

'Residents displaying residential parking permits within scheme areas can continue to park legally for the entire day.'

On Wednesday, parking inspectors were still roaming the streets in Kirribilli in North Sydney Council, checking parking meters, and hitting residents with five parking fines in 15 minutes.

However, residents were told zones with 2P parking limits - or two hours - would be extended to three hours.

Parking rangers were also spotted out in force on Wednesday morning in the CBD an Surry Hills.

'I live in Surry Hills. I took my dogs out for a walk at 8am and I walked past four parking officers in the 20 minutes I was out,' one person wrote to Twitter.

'We are in a two-week lockdown and this is how the government helps us out?'

Other Sydney local government areas said they are encouraging parking rangers to use discretion but no official easing of parking limits applies.

'As during the previous lockdown commencing in March 2020, the city will take a flexible approach to parking and other infringements with a focus on the safety of the community and its workforce,' City of Sydney told Daily Mail Australia.
