Landlords have been blasted for charging 'totally obscene' prices for their holiday homes in popular destinations in the UK.

Councillors slammed homeowners after it emerged they were charging up to £71,000 for a week's staycation this summer.

They warned the 'extortionate, eye-watering' costs are designed to attract a 'certain kind of holidaymaker' and price out 'hard working people'.

It comes after a father of three from Yorkshire revealed a three-bedroom property in St Ives in Cornwall for a week would set him back £10,232-per-night.

Conservative councillor Paul Nickerson was using booking site Vrbo, which had other holiday homes listed for sky high prices today.

A week at a caravan park in Newquay will set a tourist back £3,000 while a stay at a five-bedroom house near Windsor will be £33,000, according to the website.

Meanwhile it lists an Old Rectory in the Cotswolds at £16,000 for seven days as well as a four-bedroom townhouse in Devoran, Cornwall at £4,000 for the same time period.

Mayor of St Ives Kirsty Kilmurry-Arthur said the price quoted to Mr Nickerson was 'totally obscene' and 'extortionate' and claimed it was done 'attract a certain kind of holidaymaker'.

She told MailOnline: 'It is true that property, and in particular holiday property in St Ives, is a huge and expensive market.

'I personally believe that some of the prices are extortionate and are designed to attract a certain kind of holidaymaker, depriving many hard working people from being able to enjoy the town.

'However, this gentleman was enquiring at an unusually large property for the historic area, in the absolute peak of the season.

'Of course not all accommodation charges as much, but as with anything, as long as there are people willing to pay such eye watering prices, then the property owners can justify charging those prices.

'Perhaps this gentleman can now spare a thought for all the locals who live and work here, who have to deal with unprecedented numbers of holidaymakers which breaks records year upon year.

'On average we are one of the poorest counties in the UK, due to low wages and seasonal employment- we as locals, also would not be able to afford a weeks 'holiday' in our beautiful hometown.'

He continued: 'But some people are taking the Michael with prices and Unfortunately in the long run it will backfire on St Ives.

'Most of my fellow Councillors in St Ives are hard working like myself and we could not afford these prices, which is giving the Town a bad name.

'As Planning Chairman of St Ives Council Planning Committee, I want to encourage all holiday makers to St Ives.

'After all in my part time job I work in a bucket and spade shop, and St Ives relies on the people who support these kind of shops, St Ives is open to everyone, not just the elite.

'In fact as a gesture of goodwill to Councillor Nickerson, a friend of mine has offered him his Airbnb free of charge for the last week in August. I emailed him last night to see if he wants to take up the offer.'

Despite the revelations from Mr Nickerson sparking outrage across the country, Vrbo still has holiday homes listed at huge prices today.
