Two police forces are under investigation today after the deaths of two men they had detained.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct has been alerted to the two separate incidents in the Met and Thames Valley areas.

In London, a 'distressed' 49-year-old man died after he was handcuffed by Met Police officers.

They were called following reports of a man 'shouting for help and trying to grab people' in Catford, south east London, on Sunday evening.

They found the man 'lying on the floor, extremely distressed' and claiming to have been stabbed.

When his behaviour became 'more erratic' a single handcuff was applied to one of his arms.

But officers removed it when his condition deteriorated. He was taken to a south London hospital where he died later that evening.

His death is being investigated by the Met's Directorate of Professional Standards and a referral has been made to the IOPC.

Enquiries are ongoing to locate and inform the man's family.

Superintendent Petra Lazar, of the Met's South East Area, said: 'This is a very distressing incident, and my thoughts are with the man's family and friends.

'I will ensure that they are provided with the best possible support by the Metropolitan Police.

'A thorough investigation is under way to fully understand the circumstances, and this will include a post-mortem examination to establish the cause of the man's death. No evidence of stab injuries was found by the officers at the scene.'
