A family pet that mauled a newborn baby boy to death in the family home attacked the neighbour's dog just weeks earlier.

The five-week-old boy was killed by his family's American Staffordshire terrier at their home on Jeffs Close in Kariong on the NSW Central Coast about 2.18am on Sunday.

Police and paramedics tried to revive the little boy after they rushed to the property, but he was declared dead at the scene.

On Sunday afternoon, district commander Detective Superintendent Darryl Jobson described the situation as 'a matter of tragic proportions'.
