Scores of terrified families in lockdown across Sydney's southern suburbs have reported hearing a loud explosion which shook their homes before the sound of sirens flooded nearby streets - all after some pranksters let off fireworks.

Residents in Carlton, Rockdale, Bexley, Kogarah, Arncliffe, Bardwell Valley, Banksia, and Hurstville flocked to local Facebook groups on Sunday night after hearing a massive bang in the area. 

Despite locals fearing a huge explosion which shook their suburbs, emergency services told Daily Mail Australia it had simply been fireworks let off in a gazebo in a nearby park.

'Okay, what the f*** was that bang?' one person wrote, while another asked: 'What was that loud sound?'
