Terrified Sydney families call police after hearing an 'EXPLOSION' which 'made their house shake' - but there's a simple explanation Scores of south Sydney families flocked to social media to report an explosion Residents in eight suburbs heard a 'loud bang', some said it 'shook' their home Police and fire crews were called to Short Street, in Carlton, at 11.25pm Sunday Officers found no evidence of an explosion - it appeared to be fireworks in a park By Tita Smith For Daily Mail Australia Published: 16:23 BST, 11 July 2021 | Updated: 16:23 BST, 11 July 2021 Viewcomments Scores of terrified families in lockdown across Sydney's southern suburbs have reported hearing a loud explosion which shook their homes before the sound of sirens flooded nearby streets - all after some pranksters let off fireworks. Residents in Carlton, Rockdale, Bexley, Kogarah, Arncliffe, Bardwell Valley, Banksia, and Hurstville flocked to local Facebook groups on Sunday night after hearing a massive bang in the area. Despite locals fearing a huge explosion which shook their suburbs, emergency services told Daily Mail Australia it had simply been fireworks let off in a gazebo in a nearby park. 'Okay, what the f*** was that bang?' one person wrote, while another asked: 'What was that loud sound?' 'In Carlton, I heard a big bang like a building was hit or something or something,' someone else posted in a community page. Emergency services (pictured) were called to Short Street, Carlton, at 11.25pm on Sunday night to reports of a loud 'bang' in the area More than 100 locals rushed to Facebook groups to discuss the alarming incident, with several residents reporting being woken up by the startling noise while some in Bexley and Carlton said the commotion rattled their houses. 'That sounded like a bomb,' one person said. 'Shook my unit. That sounded too close,' one woman wrote. 'Heard it as well, both myself and next door neighbour went out. The ground shook,' another woman chimed. A third said: 'It was frightening. My whole inside body shook,' while someone else speculated: 'Meth lab exploded for sure.' 'Screw this - I'm going into my bunker. I'm 100 per cent sure it's aliens this time. See you guys on the other side,' one man joked. More than 100 residents flocked online for answers to see whether any other locals could identify the source of the concerning noise One woman recalled hearing these types of explosions earlier this month, while several sleuths offered to conduct 'essential' car trips around the neighbourhood to investigate. But those who risk the $1,000 fine for breaching the city's stay-at-home orders would have been bitterly disappointed. Emergency services were called to Short Street, in Carlton at 11.25pm after being inundated with calls from concerned citizens. Police and fire crews patrols found no evidence of an explosion. 'It appears to have been fireworks were set off in a gazebo in a park,' a NSW Fire and Rescue spokesperson said. 'We had three triple zero calls out to it. There was no evidence of a fire.'
