Horrifying footage shows the moment a propane tank exploded just minutes after a newspaper delivery driver alerted the family to a fire in the garage.

The house in Plainfield Township went up in flames on July 4, with six people, including a 15-week-old baby, and a dog making it out before the propane tank exploded.

The newspaper delivery driver banged on their door at Pleasant Creek Avenue around 4.30am, to tell them that their home's attached garage was on fire.

Grace Niemeyer rushed out of her house with her 15-week-old baby Jaxon, her phone and the clothes on her back - just a t-shirt and a pair of underwear.

The propane tank caused the massive explosion 'not five minutes' after the family escaped the fire.

In the footage, a firefighter can be seen walking towards the house when the tank explodes, sending a fireball and smoke into the air.

The firefighter drops down and turns away from the house, the blast forcing him back down away from the house.

Niemeyer said that the newspaper delivery driver was banging on the door at 4.30am, before the dog started barking which woke up her future mother-in-law Toni Jolman, MLive reported

She explained that, while the property has fire alarms, they did not immediately sound as the fire was in the garage.

She said: 'I just grabbed the phone and my son. We ran out the back door. We lost pretty much everything.'

Fire investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire and location of the propane tank, which has not yet been found due to the strength of the explosion (pictured: the fire after the explosion and fire)

Jolman told Wood TV 8 that when she heard the dogs barking she let them into her room, adding that she heard someone banging her door and screaming that her garage was on fire.

Of the good Samaritan, whose name she gave as Greg, she added: 'This man, he's an angel.
