A top executive at the Trump Organization admitted to 'mistakes' made by the ex-president's family business in an interview with New York prosecutors in 2017, according to a new report based on recently-surfaced documents.

That investigation eventually led to the shutdown of the Trump Foundation, Donald Trump's fraudulent charity, in 2018.

Jeff McConney, controller and senior vice president at the Trump family empire, acknowledged to the Office of the State Attorney General in New York that the Organization made ethical missteps - but was hesitant to criticize Donald Trump himself, according to  records from 2017 obtained by the Daily Beast.

The 35-year veteran of the Trump family empire testified before a New York grand jury in recent weeks as part of a criminal investigation by the Manhattan District Attorney's investigation.

He is the first employee of Donald Trump's company to testify in the criminal probe, ABC News reports.

'Complex accounting issues are crucial to this investigation, as is the knowledge and intent of the people at the Trump Organization involved in these transactions,' Daniel R. Alonso, former chief assistant district attorney in Manhattan, told the outlet ahead of the senior accountant's testimony.

In 2016, when Trump skipped a Republican primary debate in favor of a fundraiser for veterans, McConney testified that he 'had a checkbook and a pen, piece of paper to write down the contributions, if that was Mr. Trump's desire.'

'At that time, we thought there was a possibility of handing out checks to veterans,' he said under oath, according to The Daily Beast.

Trump had told a crowd of supporters at an Iowa rally that the event raised $6 million in just an hour, but records show only about $3 million was donated to veterans' groups more than a month later.

McConney allegedly told prosecutors he would continue financial negotiations begun by Chief Financial Officer Allen Weisselberg, who was criminally indicted in late June.
