A teenage nursery assistant who carried out a series of sex attacks on toddlers where he worked has been jailed for fourteen and a half years.

Jayden McCarthy was convicted of 13 sex assaults at the nursery as well as raping a three-year-old girl at the family run centre.

He was also convicted on two counts of raping a boy who was eight and nine some five years earlier.

McCarthy was only caught when a three-year-old girl told her mum the then 16-year-old apprentice had carried out a serious sex attack on her.

He committed the nursery rape on the same day he sexually assaulted two other girls there.

Police were alerted and officers examined 265 hours of CCTV from the family run Jack and Jill nursery in Torquay, Devon.

McCarthy was charged with a further 13 counts of sexual assault on seven other girls and one boy who were aged between two and four years.

After his arrest, another boy came forward to say McCarthy had raped him in 2014.

McCarthy was convicted of all three rapes and 13 sexual assaults by a jury after a two week trial at Exeter Crown Court in May.

Yesterday Judge David Evans sentenced him to a total of 14.5 years youth detention, and victims' family members clapped as the judge said it.

He will serve two thirds of the sentence - seven years - behind bars and will be strictly monitored on his release and faces a further three year period of licence on top of the prison term.

The judge told the teenager: 'You are a dangerous offender and pose a significant risk to members of the public of causing serious harm by the commission of further specified sexual offences. You could barely contain your sexual urges in that nursery.

'Between June 26th and July 29th you sexually asaaulted eight other children in your care aged two and four on 13 separate and blazingly obvious incidents of sexual assault.

'You are immature. I take into account your childhood experiences, childhood abuse and significant neglect. There are not clear mental health issues but you have a psychiatric illness.

'You had obtained a job in a nursery and you had received safeguarding and training in the need to protect the young and vulnerable children whose care was entrusted to you.'

He said he raped the little girl in a toilet area where CCTV cameras were understandably not in operation, unlike many areas of the Jack and Jill nursery.

The father of the little girl he raped told the court they do not know what the future impact or damage will be on her.

He said: 'I believe Jayden McCarthy has broken me as a person, the worst thing a devoted parent should have to endure. She is very wary of males, suffers night terrors and bed wetting.'

The raped boy told the court he felt isolated and in a constant of fear of the abuse he suffered and was existing and in survival mode.

He said he has been left feeling 'shame and embarrassment, unable to breathe and in a state of anxiety'.

Defence barrister Nick Lewin said McCarthy has lost seven stone in weight during the proceedings and continues to deny any wrongdoing.

He said the youth had suffered deprivations as a child and young adult.
