Newly crowned Wimbledon winner Ashleigh Barty has expressed her bitter disappointment about her 'erratic' form after crashing out of the Tokyo Olympics in the first round.

The Australian tennis world number one arrived in Tokyo as one of the gold medal favourites for the women's singles title after claiming her second Grand Slam a fortnight ago.

But Spanish opponent Sara Sorribes Tormo had other ideas and caused a massive boilover to beat Barty in straight sets.

'It was a tough day. A disappointing day,' Barty told Channel Seven.

'I can't lie about that. I can't hide behind the fact that I wanted to do really well here, and today wasn't my day.'

Barty threatened to stage a comeback at the start of the second set but was unable to land crucial shots on the court.

She made 55 unforced errors compared to her opponent's 13 in the 6-4, 6-3 shock loss.

'It was just loose,' Barty said.

'I really wanted to take the match on here today.

'Just too erratic today. Wasn't able to make enough balls.

'I never really felt comfortable out there and wasn't able to play the match on my terms.'

'The key to my game is serving well and I wasn't able to do that today. I was a bit erratic and made too many errors.'
