Office for National Statistics data showed 218 people in England and Wales succumbed to the virus in the week ending July 16, up by a fifth on the previous seven-day spell. This was equivalent to 2.2 per cent of the 9,600 deaths from all causes registered in the latest week, involving Covid in the highest proportion of deaths since late April when the second wave was dying down. As many as 268 out of 11,000 deaths across the UK (2.4 per cent) involved the virus. England registered the most (213 Covid deaths), followed by Scotland (47), Wales (4) and Northern Ireland (3). Some 27 care home residents in England and Wales also had Covid mentioned on their death certificates in the latest week, up by seven on the previous seven-day spell.
