Dramatic footage shows the moment cops yell 'drop the gun' while trying to smash the window of a moving car when two alleged thieves behind the wheel threatened them with a firearm.

Police tried to pull the white Nissan SUV over on Carpenter Street in the western Sydney suburb of Cloyton about 12.15pm on Tuesday when the situation turned dire.

In a video shared on social media on Tuesday, officers desperately tried to stop the 29-year-old man and his female passenger, 21, from driving off in the vehicle that was allegedly stolen from Victoria last week.
