More than 200,000 children at risk of suffering severe Covid-19 will be eligible for the Pfizer vaccine from next week as experts push for them to get their first jab.

The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) on Monday recommended children as young as 12 who have impaired immune systems or come from other vulnerable groups get priority access to Pfizer vaccines.

They include children aged between 12 and 15 if they are immunocompromised, have an underlying medical condition, such as asthma or diabetes, are Indigenous or in remote communities.

Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt said this meant about 220,000 children would be able to get a Pfizer vaccine.
