A brave staffy named Milly has been left fighting for life after being bitten by a venomous brown snake while protecting her beloved 'little brother'.

Queenslander Madeline Mills said her two dogs, five-year-old Milly and five-month-old Tonka, had been playing in the garden when the snake attacked on Monday, and has warned other pet owners to be on alert this spring.

The Ipswich paramedic said she had just woken up from an afternoon nap after a night shift when she discovered Milly in the backyard covered in snake bites.

The deadly brown snake had bitten Milly on her neck and leg, with the rescue dog already showing signs of the venom just minutes after the attack.

Luckily, five-month-old Tonka was unharmed by the scaly backyard intruder.

'She seemed to have protected her little brother Tonka, who didn't get any venom,' Ms Mills told 9News.

Milly was rushed to the vet in a critical condition along with her little buddy Tonka, who was allowed to return home on Tuesday.

However his 'older sister' will stay at the vet for the next couple of days after she was injected with life-saving anti-venom.

The brave staffy has been put on an IV drip and will be monitored for organ failure, but her owner said Milly was in good spirits and was 'staying strong'.
