Two men have been hailed as heroes after stepping in to stop two girls 'from being sexually assaulted' - only to be violently attacked themselves.

The pair, aged 19 and 25, told how they rushed to help the woman after seeing them 'in distress' in the Hanley area of Stoke-on-Trent.

But they were both attacked and beaten unconscious during the confrontation in the early hours on Sunday.

One of the victims has had to receive facial reconstruction surgery at the Royal Stoke University Hospital.
