A QAnon-obsessed killer dad who allegedly used a spear gun to fatally shoot both his children was handcuffed and dressed in a prison-issued jumpsuit as he was indicted by a federal grand jury for the 'heinous, cruel and depraved' crime.

Matthew Taylor Coleman, 40, appeared in federal court in downtown Los Angeles on Thursday where he was charged with two counts of foreign first-degree murder of United States nationals. 'By law, the charges are eligible for death penalty,' the news release from the attorney's office read.

The new sketches illustrate the straight-faced Coleman standing for his hearing at a courtroom in the Royal Federal Building in downtown Los Angeles.

Coleman, a surf school owner, killed his children two-year-old son Kaleo and ten-month-old daughter Roxy after leaving their Santa Barbara home on Saturday and killing them at a ranch in Mexico two days later, without his wife's knowledge.

Coleman admitted to the crime and said that he did it because he was 'receiving visions and signs that his wife possessed serpent DNA and had passed it onto his children', according to court documents.

If he didn't kill them, he 'believed his children were going to grow into monsters'.

In the indictment obtained by DailyMail.com Coleman allegedly 'committed the offence after substantial planning and premeditation to cause the death of a person'.

The Attorney General will decide at a later date whether Coleman will receive the death penalty, according to the court documents. If the Attorney General decides against the death penalty Coleman's maximum sentence would be life in prison with a fine of up to $250,000.

On August 9 Coleman allegedly murdered his two-year old son Kaleo and 10-month-old daughter Roxy because he was 'enlightened' by 'QAnon and Illuminata' conspiracy theories which claim the world is run by a group of Satan-worshipping pedophiles.

Coleman told FBI he was 'saving the world' because his children were 'going to grow into monsters', but admitted he knew what he did was wrong.

Acting US Attorney Randy Grossman said: 'The Department of Justice is determined to achieve justice for these victims and their loved ones.

'There are no words to describe the profound grief that envelops an entire community when a child is murdered.'

The Santa Barbara surf instructor allegedly killed his two young children on a Christian ranch in Rosarito, Mexico, after leaving his California home on Saturday, August 7 in a Mercedes Sprinter van and crossing the border without his wife Abby's knowledge.

He told his wife that they were going on a camping trip but did not say where. He did not take a car seat and instead left with his 10-month-old daughter in a box.

Coleman didn't answer any of his wife's calls or texts on Saturday. Family members reported that they also could not reach Coleman.

Abby, 35, reported her husband and children missing that same day. She said she was concerned for her family's well-being and because she knew her husband didn't have a car seat, according to the documents.

Coleman had checked himself and his two children into the City Express Hotel in Rosarito, where they stayed until early Monday morning, when he checked them out and took them to a field just outside town and killed them.

CCTV showed him returning to the hotel later Monday morning on his own.

Coleman was apprehended by police when trying to reenter the USA at the Ysidro Point of Entry after his wife alerted authorities to his whereabouts using the Find My iPhone app.

He told federal agents he used a spear fishing gun to shoot Kaleo and Rocxy in the heart before dumping them in a field outside Rosarito. According to court documents, when they did not die right away, Coleman stabbed his son 17 and daughter 12 more times, cutting his own hand in the process.

When Abby spoke to police the day before the murder she said she did not believe Coleman would harm her children and that they would eventually return home.

Federal agents also confirmed that she and her husband did not have any sort of argument before he left.

But Coleman had already placed his children's slain bodies in some nearby brush, discarded their bloody clothes in a blue trash bin and threw the spear fishing gun near a creek, the affidavit said.

Coleman was taken to Santa Ana jail the day after the murder and the Mexican authorities found the murder weapon, bloody clothes and a baby's blanket.

According to the court documents, when a jailer asked him why there was a band-aid on his hand he said it was from 'hurting his children'.

The surf instructor told federal agents that he knew it was wrong 'but it was the only course of action that would save the world'.

A family friend of the Colemans told People that Abby 'didn't see this coming' and is 'devastated'.

'No one did. But for her, she's starting to question everything she ever knew about her husband. It's devastating,' the anonymous friend added.

The friend, who has known the family for several years said to People: 'So now she's wondering what she could have done to stop it. Those questions are going to haunt her.

'If she had any idea that he was believing all this she would've helped him get help. But she didn't know. And now the worst has happened.'
