Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez may want to 'Tax the Rich' but she certainly fit in with the rich and famous at Monday's Met Gala thanks to a host of luxury freebies she bagged for the evening.

Aside from her lavish, custom-made gown designed by Aurora James - worth hundreds of thousands of dollars and apparently worthy of a landslide of headlines with it's 'Tax the Rich' slogan, the socialist Cinderella also wore multiple pieces from fine jewelry brand Mejuri.

The minimalistic, 14-karat gold hoop earrings from the brand are valued at $450, according to the designer's website. The matching ring from the brand's Dome collection is worth $65.

The Democratic congresswoman and Squad member also accessorized with a purse designed by James, the founder of fashion line Brother Vellies, which drove the message home with a smaller 'Tax the Rich' slogan in white letters on red.

AOC's open-toed red shoes with long up-the-leg laces, square toes and bright flowers along their heels, adorned with long laces and bright flowers along their heels, completed her head-to-toe Brother Vellies ensemble - according to the brand's website, they are valued around $614.

Although the dress seems bespoke for her figure, and is obviously customized, the politician said that it was borrowed to 'kick open the doors' at the elite event. On Instagram, she hailed New York-based James as a 'sustainably focused, Black woman immigrant designer who went from starting her dream….at a flea market in Brooklyn to winning @cfda against all odds.'

'The Met Gala is seen as elite and inaccessible,' she told a Vogue reporter at the event. 'As a working class woman, [I] wanted to... to break the fourth wall and challenge the industry.' But with her flashy accessories and custom gown, AOC hardly seemed working class.

She was quickly branded a 'hypocrite' by many online but she responded to some of the criticism on Instagram, saying she had been invited to the event as an elected official.

'Before haters get wild flying off the handle, New York elected officials are routinely invited to and attend the Met due to our responsibilities in overseeing and supporting the city's cultural institutions for the public,' she said.

'I was one of several in attendance in this evening.'

Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez boasted that she boosted Google searches about 'our f****d up tax code' by attending the Met Gala, arguably the most elitist event in American celebrity culture, in a borrowed dress with the words 'tax the rich' on them, in what critics are calling yet another example of her unedifying hypocrisy.

The 31-year-old socialist firebrand attended the event with her boyfriend Riley Roberts after getting ready at The Carlyle Hotel on the Upper East Side.

She claims she was 'invited' to the event, but won't say who paid for her, if anyone.  Conde Nast does not ordinarily comp tickets for anyone. It is more often the case that stars will be invited to sit on a donor's table that has been paid for.

AOC was photographed leaving the event with James and James' partner Benjamin Bronfman, the heir to Seagram's Company Ltd. and son of former Warner Bros CEO Edgar Bronfman Jr. AOC's reps won't say who invited her, nor will representatives for Mayor Bill de Blasio - who attended the event with his wife and his son.

On Tuesday morning, AOC boasted about the surge in Google searches for the words 'tax the rich'.

She wrote on Instagram: 'Surge in people looking up and discussing our f****d up tax code is and how we fix it so we can fund childcare, healthcare, climate action and student loan forgiveness for all? Aurora James understood the assignment.'

But she has been slammed for supporting the event by many who say she simply wanted to enjoy the limelight while trying to pass it off as a political protest in yet another example of her tone-deaf hypocrisy.

AOC - who previously posed on the cover of Vanity Fair, drives a $35,000 Tesla and claims to be '100% grass roots from the Bronx' despite growing up in a wealthy NYC suburb - wore a borrowed dress from Brooklyn designer Brother Vellies, a celebrity favorite run by Aurora James and had her make-up done beforehand by a Bobbi Brown artist. Her hair was styled by Vogue stylist Eric Williams and her shoes and bag were also from Brother Vellies.
