Former rugby league pin-up boy Matt Cooper has split from his long term wife.

Cooper, 42, who represented the St George Illawarra Dragons his entire footy career, shares two daughters aged 12 and 9 with his ex-partner Dallas.

It is understood the couple went their separate ways amicably, with the family of four spending 10 months of last year travelling around Australia.

The couple's luxury home, which features a pool and media room, is just minutes from a handful of beaches outside Wollongong, on the NSW south coast.

The asking price of the property in Windang is over $2 million.

After retiring in 2013, the athlete viewed by many as the sexiest man to ever grace a rugby league field turned his attention to the small screen.

In recent years, Cooper has featured on Dancing With The Stars, I'm A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here!, Celebrity Apprentice and The Full Monty.

The NRL premiership winner with the Red V in 2010 also recently finished filming the second series of Big Brother VIP for Channel 7.

Cooper made his NRL debut for the Dragons in the opening round of the 2000 season, and quickly forged a reputation as an elite centre.

The hard nosed defender, who scored 125 tries in a glittering career, went onto represent NSW in State of Origin campaigns from 2004-2010.

In addition, he donned the Australian Kangaroos jersey on seven occasions.

Cooper also has some friends in very high places. He is a longtime mixed martial arts (MMA) fanatic who enjoys a personal friendship with UFC boss Dana White.

He is keen to eventually take on former NSW Blues captain Paul Gallen in the ring - but not a boxing one, rather an octagon ring.

'I don't want to box him,' he said recently. 'I have been training in mixed martial arts for years and my strength is in my kicking. That's where I would have Gal's measure and really, I have no interest in boxing. I just love MMA.

'To be honest, footballers fighting footballers in the boxing ring is old news, and so is boxing. The younger generation isn't interest in boxing, they want MMA. That's why UFC is one of the biggest sporting organisations in the world.'
