Elise Stefanik doubled-down on Wednesday on her call for the creation of yet another 9/11-style commission to probe the Biden administration's bungled troop withdrawal from Afghanistan.
'The purpose is to make sure we have an independent analysis of the decisions and the mistakes that were made, starting from going into Afghanistan after 9/11, to the failed withdrawal in the Biden administration,' she told Fox News after a House Armed Services Committee hearing.
The GOP Conference chairwoman detailed the commission would consist of ten members appointed by the president and Democrats and Republicans in Congress so a 'wide range' of experience and viewpoints are considered.
Stefanik stressed that a commission of those 'outside of Congress and the Department of Defense' would help ensure an 'independent look' is taken at the 20-year war and the events leading to its end.
She said that she believes the probe into the war and withdrawal is 'very important for taxpayers' since trillions of U.S. taxpayer dollars funded operations in Afghanistan over the last two decades.
The Armed Services panel, which Stefanik serves on, questioned on Wednesday Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley, and Commander of U.S. Central Command General Kenneth Frank McKenzie about the Afghanistan withdrawal.
