The mother of a young football player left in a critical condition after an horrific one-punch attack has revealed he has gone 'drastically downhill'.

Danny Hodgson, 26, was allegedly attacked near Perth Train Station on September 4 on his way home from a soccer game.

He was rushed to Royal Perth Hospital with severe head injuries, and underwent emergency surgery for bleeding to the brain and a skull fracture.

His parents Nicola and Peter were granted an exemption to travel from the UK to see their son after making a desperate online plea for plane tickets.

Mr Hodgson's mother Nicola posted an update on his condition to Facebook saying that her son had taken a 'turn for the worst (sic)' last Friday and his condition had deteriorated.

'Danny has had further bleeds on the brain and has had more emergency operations over the last few days,' Ms Hodgson posted,

'Danny has had to be put back into an induced coma to try and give his body and brain a rest.'

'We are distraught obviously [about] how far he has deteriorated in a small space of time, but we ask for you all to pray for him or send positive thoughts as we need them now more than ever.'

Two weeks ago Mr Hodgson opened his eyes but was then sedated and placed back on a ventilator after having a tracheotomy to protect his airway.

The personal trainer, originally from Cumbria in north-west England, also suffered severe haemorrhaging of the brain.

Soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo sent a personal message to Mr Hodgson, who plays for Perth side ECU Joondalup SC in the National Premier League and claimed the club's 'golden boot' award as the competition's leading goalscorer in 2020.

'Hi Danny, I just heard about your story, I hope you get well soon. I invite you to come to one of our games in Manchester, so get well soon my friend,' the Manchester United star said in the video.
