A South Korean woman has been deluged with thousands of prank calls and text messages since the hit Netflix show Squid Game broadcast her phone number onscreen.

Kim Gil-young, who owns a business in the southeastern county of Seongju, told local broadcaster SBS last month that she has received thousands of messages and phone calls from people asking to join the Squid Game and go 'from rags to riches.'

In the show, which premiered in the United States on September 17 and has since become an international hit, desperate people are given calling cards with a phone number to call if they want to participate in the Squid Games - a series of deadly children's games - in  a bid to win 45.6 billion won (equivalent to $38.3 million).

In the first episode of the nine-part thriller, Gong Yoo, who plays an unnamed character, gives Ki-hoon (played by Lee Jung-jae) the card, which shows Gil-young's actual eight digit phone number.

Netflix and Siren Pictures now say they will edit the phone number out of the show and have asked fans to restrain from prank calls and text messages.
