Peru has the highest Covid death rate in the world with more than 6,000 per million losing their lives to the deadly virus, according to new figures.

Some 199,632 have died during the pandemic in the country of 32.97million people, nearly doubly the proportion of the next worst affected country (3,256 deaths per million).

The pandemic has had a wildly uneven effect on different countries across the world, with China — where the virus originated — only recording 30 deaths per million people.

In comparison, Britain is the 24th worst affected country in the world, with 2,047 per million dying, while the US is the 20th (2,161 per million).

Not all countries accurately report the amount of Covid victims they have seen and deaths attributed to the virus vary in how they are counted.

Here MailOnline reviews how hard the pandemic has hit countries across the world.
