A 17-year-old Florida teen was shot dead by police after pointing a 'military-style rifle' at officers who were responding to calls that the boy was targeting passing cars with what turned out to be a pellet gun, officials said. 

Alexander King, 17, of Tarpon Springs, Florida, was fatally shot by police at 9.30pm on Saturday after witnesses called 911 about King waving a 'military-style rifle' at passing cars at the North Pinellas and Tarpon Avenues intersection in Tarpon Springs, Florida. 

King - who had two felony arrests - raised his weapon at police when two officers arrived on the scene, according to Tarpon Springs Police Chief Jeffrey Young. 

The Tarpon Springs High School student had posted the gun on his Instagram page on March 24, writing: 'New airsoft vietnam era M14. I absolutely love it.'
