NSW recorded just 283 new infections on Wednesday, a slight rise in new cases from the day before. The details of the deaths was not yet available but it expected to be announced later on Wednesday morning. Hospitalisations also declined again, falling from 589 on Tuesday to 552 on Wednesday and Covid patients admitted to intensive care wards also fell. Despite Covid-19 cases in NSW continuing to decline, nearly 600 children under nine were counted among the state's locally acquired cases in the past week. The statistic from NSW Health also shows over 400 children and teens in the 10-19 age bracket were infected, while similar levels were recorded in the 20-29 and 30-39 age groups. The figures are a sobering reminder of the infectiousness of the Delta strain in younger people, with transmission up to five times higher than the 2020 version of the virus, data from the National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance (NCIRS) showed.
