New intercity trains in NSW have been delayed by up to 18 months, adding to public transport woes caused by an entire light rail shutting down due to cracks in tram wheels.
The new fleet of trains, costing $2.88 billion, are being built in South Korea.
The first of the new trains had originally been scheduled to begin carrying passengers to and from Newcastle and the Central Coast in 2019, and the Blue Mountains mid last year.
But in NSW Budget estimates last week it was revealed production of the trains had been beset by productions problems and other delays related to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Transport for NSW now expects delivery of the contract to be delayed by 18 months until mid-2024.
