The heartbroken family of a California child tragically killed by a stray bullet when he was caught in crossfire while sleeping in his car seat as his mother drove is demanding those responsible for the senseless death surrender to police.

Twenty-three-month-old Jasper Wu's life was cut short after he was wounded in the head when two vehicles exchanged gunfire on Oakland's Interstate 880 around 2pm on Saturday.

Jasper, from Fremont, was asleep in his car seat inside his mom's white Lexus sedan while she drove back home to Oakland from San Francisco.

The little boy's father, who could not travel before due to COVID-19 restrictions but is now on his way to the Bay Area from China, will see his son in person for the first time at the funeral.

According to KPIX 5, one of the suspects was driving a dark color Chrysler 300.

'Evidence collected on the northbound side of the freeway may indicate the victims were not targeted and the child passenger was struck by a stray bullet,' Oakland police said in a statement.

The Fremont Police Department said on Twitter: 'We are saddened by the tragic event that occurred last night in @Oakland resulting in the death of one of our youngest community members. On behalf of @FreemontPD, we send our sincerest condolences to the family.'

Lucy Tovar, a neighbor   of the Wu's family, was shocked and saddened by the news that Jasper had been killed.
