An eight-day-old baby was killed in an early morning pit bull attack that took place inside a North Carolina home Wednesday. 

The female dog was seized by Johnston County Animal Control and will be euthanized after a 72-hour hold.

Kenly Police Chief Josh Gibson has called the death an accident and issued his condolences to the infant's family.

'First and foremost, we offer our sincere condolences to the family and their friends during this difficult time,' Chief Gibson told the Johnston County Report.

It remains unclear at this time if anyone will be held accountable for the attack.
