As airports around Australia slowly begin to bustle with passengers again, an airfare price war could see hundreds of dollars wiped of the cost of tickets.
In a major shakeup of the east coast market, regional airline Rex is offering $79 one-way fares as standard between Melbourne and Brisbane from December 17, starting on Monday.
Rex bought former Virgin Australia Boeing 737s for the twice-daily flights as the first step to breaking into the lucrative 'golden triangle' market between Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne.

The airline's deputy chairman said the move would cause prices to drop across the board with both Qantas and Virgin dropping fares to match Rex.
'We're determined to make up for time lost due to the Covid pandemic and push ahead with plans to expand our network, particularly in Queensland,' Mr Sharp said.
