Michael Clarke has declared the time is right for Pat Cummins to join him as Australia's least-experienced Test captain in 45 years, with so many senior players around him.

Cummins remains the favourite to take over the reins of the Australian Test team heading into the Ashes series, following Tim Paine's shock resignation on Friday.

Cricket Australia is yet to set a timeline for the announcement.

If Cummins is made captain, he will join Clarke as the only men since Greg Chappell to be named as full-time captain without having first led their state in Sheffield Shield.

But while Clarke admitted that would be a hard ask starting in an Ashes series, he reasoned it would be made easier by having a good number of vastly-experienced players around him.
