In the footage, which was captured during a rally in Nelson, the tiny woman named Jan can be seen stepping out in front of the large crowd. She held a 'kung-fu' pose as the group approached. 'They're not going to stop, lady,' a bystander can be heard saying. The protesters lifted their banner that read 'freedom for all Kiwis' to avoid hitting the woman. The footage has gone viral and has been hailed as iconic. Jan has since spoken out about the moment, explaining it was a spur of the moment decision to jump in front of the group. 'I wanted to cross the street and there they were bearing down on me and I thought I have as much right to be here as you have,' she told the New Zealand Herald. 'I didn't agree with the messages they were giving out. I have friends who are immune compromised who need to be protected from the unvaccinated and from Covid-19. 'My instinct was I'm going to make a stand and my stand was to say you are wrong.'
