This is the crazy moment a tour guide played tug of war with a playful lion.

Tour guide Jabulani Salinda, 49, was leading a group through Baobab Ridge Game Lodge, South Africa, on November 18.

He was tipped off by a colleague that there were lions nearby so he moved his truck around.

But he got the jeep stuck in the ground and had to be towed free using the rope.

In a video that has been viewed more than 13,000 times online, the male lion grabs onto the tow rope before Mr Salinda can pull it back in.

It tugs persistently at the end while guests on the truck laugh in the background.

The 49-year-old guide tried to drive off but the lion dug in its paws before it wrapped the line around a nearby tree to get extra leverage.

In the footage, the lion takes the rope in its mouth and saunters over to a tree.

It tries to wrap the rope around it in a bid to win the tug of war and disappears behind the tree as it begins to shake.

Laughs are heard in the footage as the rope drops but the lion then stalks back to pick it up in his mouth.
