A five-year-old girl was shot dead on Thanksgiving after her three-year-old cousin knocked into a loaded gun that had been left sitting on a chair, causing it to fire and shoot her in the chest.

Khalis Eberhart was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in South Fulton, Georgia, after her father, Nathaniel, rushed to paramedics with the little girl cradled in his arms after she was shot at their apartment around 7pm.

The gun belonged to the three-year-old's father, South Fulton Police Chief Keith Meadows told 11Alive.

The family told news outlets that the accidental Thanksgiving shooting was 'shocking and traumatic.'

Khalis is survived by two brothers - a six-year-old and her twin - according to her grandmother, Tracy Towns.

Earlier this year, the girl's mother passed away, leaving her father Nathaniel (pictured) to care for a six-year-old boy, Khalis and her twin brother alone
