The 2021 Prime Minister's Spelling Bee has named three national winners after the tough competition saw 21,000 students tackle words like quandary and verbatim.

The pro-spellers met with Scott Morrison in Canberra on Monday after winning the Prime Minister's Spelling Bee in June.

The 2021 winners were Arielle Wong from Donvale Christian College, VIC, (Year 3/4 category), Theekshitha Karthik from Haileybury College, VIC, (Year 5/6 category) and Evan Luc-Tran from The McDonald College, NSW, (Year 7/8 category).

The finalists had 15 minutes to spell 30 randomly selected words like connoisseur, meteorological, cholesterol, verbatim and expenditure.

Donvale Christian College described Arielle's win as an 'astounding feat'.

'Arielle worked hard to study and prepare for the contest and on Thursday, May 27 she completed the Spelling Bee with a score of 27/30 in a speedy 1 minute and 25.5 seconds,' a school statement read.

'Congratulations Arielle! All of your hard work and preparation has more than paid off, and we are so proud of you.'

Each of the triumphant spellers won one night's accomodation as well as a return flight to Canberra to be congratulated by the Prime Minister.

Champions were gifted an iPad, a $250 HarperCollins book pack and a certificate, and won their school a $1000 voucher to spend on books, technology or supplies.
