A western Sydney mayor was allegedly set upon by a stranger at a polling booth in front of stunned volunteers and voters.

Ugly footage captured the moment the man, 29, allegedly attacked Cumberland City Council mayor Steve Christou outside a school in Merrylands during Saturday's local council elections.

The footage, which was recorded by a witness on the lawn outside a polling station , shows Mr Christou in an orange shirt arguing with the man in grey at 5pm.
