The luxury Sydney mansion which was the scene of a grisly unsolved murder of a wealthy doctor, whose sister was also brutally murdered, has sold for 'well over' $15m. The palatial white home - 'a piece of Hollywood in Woollahra' with swimming pool, sumptuous terrace and lush, manicured gardens - was the site of Dr Michael Chye's execution-style murder more than 30 years ago. Known as Attunga Lodge and set on 1100sq m with exquisite park-like grounds, it became a house of horrors on the night of on the night of October 16, 1989 when Dr Chye's body was found in a pool of blood and brain matter. The doctor had steered his bronze Mercedes Benz into the house's garage where a gunman lay in wait. The shooter fired three times at close range, striking Dr Chye in his head and chest. The 1868 property hidden away at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac was soon crawling with police who learnt Dr Chye was planning to sue Sydney restaurateur Mark Caleo over a failed $3.6m property deal. Mark Caleo was the husband of Dr Chye's sister Rita, who would meet her own violent death just 10 months later when she was stabbed 23 times. Luxury mansion Attunga Lodge (above) has sold for $15m plus, despite being the scene of a grisly murder in the garage of a wealthy doctor who was ambushed in his Mercedes Actress Rose Byrne stayed last year while in Sydney at the property set on 1100sq m with exquisite park-like grounds, a swimming pool and five bedrooms Rita Caleo (left) was stabbed 23 times and bled to death a suburb away and 10 months after her brother Dr Michael Chye (right) was shot assassination-style by a lone gunman Ms Caleo had left a mysterious handwritten note before her death, sealed in an envelope on which she wrote: 'To be opened only if my death has been deemed unnatural'. Dr Chye's death house was originally called Dodington and had been rebuilt in 1939 by District Court judge Humfry Henchman and his wife, Nancy. They lived there until the 1980s, with subsequent owners including Peter Weir, the legendary film director of Picnic At Hanging Rock, Dead Poet's Society, Witness and The Truman Show. Last year, actress Rose Byrne and her US actor husband Bobby Cannavale stayed in the five bedroom, four bathroom house which has a secluded dress circle position. The home had been 'reimagined' by one of its owners, the property developer, Bill Shipton, who transformed it into an exquisite family estate of magnificent proportions and masterful architectural design. Police investigating Michael Chye's murder at Attunga Lodge in 1989 learnt allegations from his friends that Mark Caleo had made violent threats against the Malaysian-born doctor. Dr Chye had emigrated to Australia from Malaysia alone at the age of 17 to further his education. Sydney restaurateur Mark Caleo (above) was arrested 25 years after his wife's violent death and is currently serving a maximum 12 years jail for soliciting her murder Rita Caleo's handwritten note to her solicitor stipulated it be read 'in the event that my death is unnatural' and pointed the finger of blame directly at her husband, Mark Caleo Real estate agents are bound to dislcose any recent violent past to buyers, but the Attunga Street mansion had undergone significant renovations since Michael Chye's 1989 murder He and Rita Caleo were the children of a senior-ranking police officer in Malaysia. One of the last things Rita Caleo ever did was host a lavish dinner party for four close friends at her upmarket Double Bay townhouse. It was August 10, 1990 and during the evening, she received several phone calls with 'no-one' at the other end Her husband Mark was still at their restaurant in Brighton-Le-Sands, but the Caleo marriage was in trouble after Rita discovered he was having an affair with a woman she knew. Mark loved money and owned a Porsche, a Mercedes-Benz and a Rolls-Royce, whereas Rita loved gold jewellery and wore a gold Rolex and bought up to $50,000 worth of jewellery at a time. After saying goodnight to her girlfriends, Rita went into her bedroom ensuite. The Caleos' nanny and and their young girls, aged four and 16 months, were asleep in an adjoining bedroom. Mark Caleo, above after his 2015 arrest, loved money and especially flashy cars and conspired to murder his wife after she cut him out of her will over an affair he had with another woman Actress Rose Byrne and her partner, US actor Bobby Cannavale (above in New York City in September) spent part of 2021 living at the mansion where the murder took place A man suddenly entered the ensuite with a knife and stabbed the slight, 50kg woman 23 times before running from the house. The nanny woke around 1.30am to hear 'faint whining' sounds and found her employer bleeding from multiple stomach wounds, but by the time an ambulance arrived, Rita was dead. Police soon learned that three months earlier, Rita had visited her lawyer, John Morrisey, and cut her husband out of her will. While she was at Mr Morrisey's office, she had written the letter to be opened if she had died in an 'unnatural' way. Inside was a 15-line letter that would mark the start of a 25-year murder mystery. The letter said 'In the event that my death is unnatural, direct the investigation to my husband Mark Caleo. Please do not let Mark get away with this.' The letter also names the late used car dealer Rick Damelian, but police never charged Damelian in connection to Rita's murder. The family who have just sold the property for more than $15m described it as a 'piece of Hollywood tucked away in Woollahra' and the 'the perfect family residence for us and our three children' Dr Michael Chye was ambushed as he steered his bronze Mercedes Benz into the garage although the current plan of the mansion reflects its substantial upgrading since 1989 Police formed Strike Force Nichola to inquire into the deaths of the two siblings and a 1991 inquest found both had been involved in the $3.6m Blakehurst waterfront property dispute. But it would take decades for them to charge anyone and by that time it was cold case detectives investigating the murders. Just after 6.30am on February 4, 2015, NSW Police arrived at a property in the southern Sydney suburb of Ramsgate. They arrested Mark Caleo, then aged 52, and took him to Kogarah police station where they formally charged him with murdering and soliciting the murder of Mrs Caleo and Dr Chye 25 years earlier. Police alleged Caleo wanted Rita dead because she 'knew too much'. But the charge against him for the murder in the Attunga Lodge garage in February 1989 was dropped. In July 2018, Mark Caleo was convicted and sentenced for soliciting the murder of his wife and jailed for a maximum of 12 years, with a non-parole period of eight. Nobody has ever been convicted for the murder of Rita's brother Michael. Rose Byrne and her partner stayed at the house which has been significantly upgraded and renovated in the decades since Dr Michael Chye owned the secluded property The Agency's Ben Collier said the luxury property had sold for more than $15m after four weeks on the market, but the owners did not want the exact sale price disclosed. Real estate agents are under an obligation to disclose 'material facts' in relation to any property they are selling, which can include the fact that a violent death or even a suicide took place at the property. A section of the Property Stock and Business Agents Act was altered after the Sydney home in which 20-year-old Sef Gonzalez bludgeoned and stabbed to death his parents and sister went up for sale in 2004. The rules for disclosure about a property's violent past changed in 2004 when buyers of the Sef Gonzales murder house (above) found out what had happened within its walls and did not proceed with the purchase Sef Gonzales (above) slaughtered his family aged 20 out of greed, bludgeoning his father Teddy, mother Loiva and sister Clodine who he also stabbed after lying in wait at their home The buyers were unaware of the violent events which had taken place within its walls, and when they did find out did not want to proceed with the purchase. The agent had to refund their deposit, and the home was later sold for less than the original price. The law changed and real estate agents must now disclose any 'material fact' before they can sell a property. But what actually constitutes a material fact isn't always clear. Mr Collier told Daily Mail Australia if he was asked about Attunga Lodge or any other property with a violent past, he would make a full disclosure. But he said that in some cases the incident had happened many years before and the property had been significantly altered since. Some buyers would not want to purchase a property for religious reasons or superstitions about death, but he said others were not bothered by a house's history. 'There are terraces in Paddington where there have been murders of people bludgeoned to death ... but it's a hundred years ago,' he said. Attunga Lodge was sold to its new owners by Fintech founder Craig Carroll and his wife Kathryn, who bought the home for $4.6m in 2012. The couple transformed the home with Bill Shipton's help, renovating the house, pool area and gardens. The Carrolls described the house as a 'piece of Hollywood tucked away in Woollahra' and the 'the perfect family residence for us and our three children'.
