Thousands of poverty-stricken Australian women and girls are set to be given free menstrual products as part of a new initiative. 

Crown Sydney has partnered with charity foodbank to provide tampons and pads to families living below the poverty line where young girls struggle to get through their periods. 

The sanitary products will be added into grocery hampers Foodbank, which feeds more than 815,000 people across Australia each month,  the Daily Telegraph reports.

A domestic violence survivor who founded charity group Our Community Pantry, said the initiative would help many women facing hardship.

The woman, who wished to only be identified as 'Paula', said securing menstrual products can be stressful for families fleeing violence and struggling financially.

She relied on supplies from Foodbank for 18 months after fleeing her violent home with her three daughters, then aged 18, 17, and nine, before later founding her charity to help others.
