Paramedics are experiencing 'extremely high demand' for ambulances in Melbourne and public transport delays are expected, as Covid-19 continues to impact services.

Ambulance Victoria issued a 'code red' overnight warning there would be delays in ambulances reaching people in the city and asking for triple zero to be reserved for emergencies.

'Ambulance Victoria is experiencing an extremely high demand for ambulances in the metropolitan region,' a statement released on Tuesday read.

'It is likely there will be a delay in an ambulance reaching you. Our priority is to provide care to Victorians who require life-saving assistance.'

The overwhelming demand for ambulances prompted AV to issue a second 'code red' in a week, as people continue to call triple zero for non-emergencies.

A similar statement was issued on January 5, as health officials continue to urge residents to use Nurse on Call services or report to their GP instead.

It comes after data revealed an overwhelming amount of people are calling triple zero to inquire about vaccines, testing and results, the Herald Sun reports.
