The humble larrikin from Brisbane, 28, set a PGA Tour record over the weekend, finishing an astonishing 34-under par - in doing so moving into the world's top 10.
Smith, who represented Australia at the Olympics in Tokyo, believes his easy going nature is the key to his lightning ascent in the sport.
'I actually don't remember a lot of the shots that I hit. I think that's actually one of my greatest assets, is just forgetting,' Smith told reporters.
'I think I just need to keep doing what I'm doing.'
