York Racecourse is set to rebrand one of its most historic events in a bid to distance itself from Prince Andrew amid sexual assault accusations.

The Duke of York Stakes is a prestigious six-furlong sprint contested on the opening day of the Dante Festival.

First staged in 1895, the race derives its name from Prince George, Duke of York, who went on to become King George V.

But concerned racecourse bosses said they now want to revisit the alias after the Queen stripped Prince Andrew of his honorary military titles and a potential trial loomed in the US.

Officials said they planned to 'explore' how they could make the century-old name 'clearer' and avoid any unwanted connection with the embattled royal - who is currently being sued in America for allegedly sexually assaulting a teenager.

Andrew maintains his innocence and intends to fight the civil sex case as a private citizen.
