Retail sales plunged 3.7 per cent in December as Omicron caused Christmas misery for high streets.

Sales volumes were down sharply in the crucial festive period, with the 'Plan B' work from home order coming into force and consumers not fuelling up cars as much.

Food sales dipped by 1 per cent, while clothing and household shops showed one of the biggest falls - with evidence many people stocked up for Christmas in November in response to fears about supply chain chaos.

Despite the dip retail volumes were still 2.6 per cent above their level from February 2020.
