Tennis star turned commentator Jelena Dokic has choked back tears on live television during a post-match interview at the Australian Open.

The former world number four Serbian-Australian got the job of interviewing French star Alizé Cornet after she caused a huge boilover to beat title contender Simona Halep in three sets to progress to the quarter finals at Melbourne Park.

Cornet, 32, was already emotional after making her first ever quarter-final at a grand slam on her 63rd attempt, 17 years after her career began.

The on-court interview began and ended with the pair sharing warm hugs before Cornet paid a gushing tribute to her one-time opponent who has had recent mental health battles.

'I just want to thank my box first, but also I want to tell you something, how you moved on in your life, I think we can all congratulate you,' she told Dokic.

'You were an amazing player and now an amazing commentator, so bravo Jelena.'

The pair shared a heartwarming embrace as Dokic became choked up with emotion on air.

'You just made me cry. I can't believe I'm crying,' she said.

Dokic recently opened up about her mental health battles and fat-shaming she has received from online trolls.

She also announced her split from her partner of 18 years, Tin Bikic just a week ago.

Cornet, a former world number 11, was a rising star on the tennis circuit during the later stage of Dokic's playing career and almost faced off against each other in the 2009 Australian Open semi finals.

But neither player progressed past the fourth round, where Cornet had two match points against eventual tournament finalist Dinara Safin before losing.

'I was preparing to play my match in the fourth round to play the winner of you and Safina in the quarter finals,' Dokic recalled.

'You had a couple of match points. I know how hard that was for you.'

'I can see how emotional you are.  It means so much to you.'

The moving exchange comes just days after Dokic posted an untouched photograph of herself to prove how she really looks after she was humiliated by sick trolls photoshopping images to fat shame her.

The former tennis star turned commentator said she was sick of seeing fake pictures that were edited to make her look 'bigger' so people could 'make fun of her'.

Dokic went on an extraordinary attack against the body shamers, saying she had received a barrage of cruel comments demanding: 'Why are you so fat?'

The 38-year-old star posted a long statement on Instagram begging the bullies to stop making posts about appearance, branding it 'disgusting behaviour'.

Her powerful stand was met with a chorus of support from devoted fans who praised her 'brilliant' commentary at the Australian Open.

'I am being body shamed again and I am seeing comments and even articles about my weight and appearance. It's disgusting behaviour,' the Croatian-born tennis star, who has battled depression, wrote.

'Just stop already. Not just when it comes to me but other people as well, especially women. This is a serious problem and one that women face all the time.

'I have said it before and I will say it again - stop commenting on my weight and size. It is not kind and it's
