Olympic medalists, musicians, scientists and a mining magnate, as well as everyday heroes, have all been recognised in this year's Australia Day honours list.

The prestigious list released on Wednesday honours the achievements and contributions of 1,040 Australians from all walks of life, with winners aged between 17 and 99.

Pop star Delta Goodrem, mining magnate Gina Rinehart, actress Deborra-Lee Furness, much-loved television cook Maggie Beer and sports stars Patty Mills, Daniel Ricciardo and Dylan Alcott are among of dozens of household names recognised.

The list also honours the quiet achievers and unsung local heroes with almost half of the awards in recognition of outstanding community outstanding service.

The highest-ever percentage of women were honoured in the general division, making up 47 per cent of the 732 awards.

Goodrem has been appointed a Member (AM) of the Order of Australia for her services to the performing arts and charity while Rinehart has been elevated to an Officer (AO) of the Order.

Ms Rinehart's gong - for distinguished service to the mining sector and philanthropic contributions - is the second-top award, with seven people appointed Companions (AC) of the Order, the highest honour.

Goodrem admitted she cried 'happy tears' when she got the news about the AM.

'It was a strong intention to give back from the day I got into music because I believe in people and the power of kindness and I wanted to lift someone's day through song,' the Hodgkin's lymphoma survivor told the Daily Telegraph.

'As fate would have it, I did go through a very personal challenge which changed that dynamic and I developed these incredible relationships with the people at St Vincent's that allowed me to strive to make a difference.'

Actor Deborra-lee Furness, the wife of Hugh Jackman, has been appointed an AO for her distinguished service as an adoption advocate and as an ambassador to the arts and not-for-profit organisations.

The Adopt Change founder is on a mission to make adoption more accessible.

'When we started, no one in government would talk to us and there was such negativity, still the old stigma from the past around adoption,' she said.

'They talk to us now. They're now taking on our recommendations. There have been archaic beliefs around single people adopting, around LGBTQ people adopting. We work with the Indigenous community in this space. How far is there to go? I would love to be out of a job. This is a big, big issue.'
