Western Australian Police are due to receive two new custom-built armoured tanks strong enough to bulldoze through double-bricked homes.

The armoured vehicles known as 'BearCats' can reach speeds of up to 120km per hour and defend against .50 calibre firearm rounds and other explosives. 

The trucks will cost taxpayers an eye-watering $1.1million and are two months into production by US-based manufacturer Lenco Armoured Vehicles.

The vehicles will replace two older models already in the forces' collection and will be deployed to tackle armed criminals in high-risk situations.

Police Minister Paul Papalia said the replacements would be 'more capable' with modifications built specifically to the requirements of the force. 

'As an example, in the last 12 months from January 2021 to January this year these vehicles were employed 45 times around the state,' Mr Papalia said.
