The Prime Minister of Solomon Islands has called Australia's use of the term 'backyard' to describe Pacific nations as offensive.
Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare said on Tuesday that Australia calling Solomon Islands its 'backyard' was insulting because 'it is where rubbish is collected and burnt. It is where we relieve ourselves.'
The term was used by Australia's Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews on March 24 when news broke about leaked documents suggesting the island nation had reached a new security alliance with China.

'That is our backyard, this is our neighbourhood, and we are very concerned of any activity that is taking place in the Pacific Islands,' Ms Andrews said.
But Mr Sogavare has not taken aim at her use of the term, responding over a month later in the Solomons Island parliament on Tuesday.
