One left school at 11 to start work tarmacking the roads; the other spent his youth at Eton College, where fees are £44,000 a year. But boxer Tyson Fury and MP Jacob Rees-Mogg have more in common than you might think — from their Christian faith to six children each. Not to mention £100 million fortunes. ALISON BOSHOFF looks at the unlikely links between the political heavyweight and the two-time world heavyweight champion.

Role model dads with influence

Jacob Rees-Mogg was born into the Establishment, one of five children of the late Times editor William Rees-Mogg, who was made a life peer in 1988. ‘I was devoted to my father and I still miss him,’ Jacob has said.

Tyson’s father, John, also provided him with a role model to emulate — he was a bare-knuckle boxer in the 1980s and competed at professional level.

Fury Snr named his son after his hero Mike Tyson after seeing how the baby, born three months premature, would work his tiny fists as though he was boxing.

Tyson, who has traveller roots, says his father taught him the value of discipline. ‘My dad had me working really late on Fridays and Saturday mornings and even on Sunday mornings.’

But his home life was less stable. He said: ‘My mother and father were always shouting, screaming and hitting each other.’

John Fury was sent to prison for 11 years in 2011 for gouging a man’s eye out during a fight.

£100 million fortunes in the bank

Both men are said to be worth around £100 million, although Rees-Mogg, 52, denies he has this. He said last week: ‘I am not going to put a figure on it, but any estimate I have seen is absurd.’

He co-founded Somerset Capital Management in 2007 but has since resigned as fund manager and is now a sleeping partner.

Fury, 32, meanwhile, says that he doesn’t care about money. He said this week: ‘I come from f*** all. I don’t care what I’ve got.’

Christians with hard-line values

Rees-Mogg is a devout Roman Catholic and was one of a handful of MPs to vote against legalising same-sex marriage in 2013. He also believes that women should not have abortions, even in cases of rape or incest.

He said: ‘Marriage is a sacrament ordained by God — it cannot be changed by an act of Parliament.’ He added: ‘I think abortion is one of the great tragedies of the modern world.’ Fury has similarly found himself at the centre of repeated controversies due to his views on abortion and homosexuality, which again spring from his Christian faith.

But he said: ‘I am not homophobic — my comments are from the holy scriptures.’

Two tweedy chaps fond of a stylish outfit

Tyson Fury is fond of Versace tracksuits and Louis Vuitton suits. He wears a gold and diamond Rolex watch. However, he’s also been known to wear top-to-toe tweed — a sartorial choice which is also favoured by Rees-Mogg when he is in his country constituency of North-East Somerset.

Rees-Mogg is famed for his huge collection of ties and favours a jacket and tie on pretty much every occasion. He’s said that he’s never worn a T-shirt nor owned a pair of jeans or trainers.

Home is where the heart is... a red brick mansion

The Rees-Moggs live in Gournay Court, an eight-bedroom 17th-century red sandstone mansion in Somerset. Bought in 2010, it is now said to be worth £2.5 million. They are also thought to have a house in London. Gournay Court was once owned by the Duchy of Cornwall.

The Furys also live in a mansion, but in Morecambe, Lancashire, in a large red-brick new-build (right) which they moved into last year.

Speaking on a TV documentary in 2020, Fury said: ‘People say to me: “Why don’t you live in California?” Why would I abandon my own country for a bit of money and fame? I’d never leave Morecambe — I love it. If the weather was
