A group of regional councils have called for a major Australian defence hub to be moved closer to their area amid emerging security threats in the South Pacific.

The area's Regional Organisation of Councils put its defence strategy forward on Wednesday in a $4.5billion plan that would involve building new army bases in Central Queensland, giving the Australian Defence Force scope to launch longer missiles.
