Toby Mitchell this week used his massive social media platform to send a pointed message to some former bikie mates who did him wrong.

In another era, disgruntled bikies might have simply popped a bullet in the mail, or sprayed their clubhouse with them.

Standing before a group of heavies, Mitchell told his 333,000 Instagram followers - and his former Mongols mates - he wasn't going anywhere.

Mitchell had been running the gang up until April 1, when he was unceremoniously booted.

How Mitchell lived past the early 2000s is a tribute to medical science more than anything else.

He was hit three times in the hip and back in the botched assassination attempt.

Two shooters had taken aim at him as he left the gym - a stone's throw from the Bandidos' clubhouse - but Mitchell wouldn't die.

One of the bullets had hit a passing car with children inside.

Detective Superintendent Brett Guerin told reporters at the time the hit on Mitchell had been 'spectacularly unsuccessful'.

'It ended up being a chase through a public carpark with shots being fired indiscriminately.

'In terms of professionalism, compared to some of the murders that we've seen in Victoria over the past five to 10 years where offenders have laid in wait obviously having done reconnaissance and shot someone in the back of the head to make sure, I wouldn't call it professional.'

Mitchell had already been known to Melburnians with an interest in crime after he hooked up with the glamourous ex of drug lord Tony Mokbel.

Danielle McGuire, who was famously captured dragging on a smoke outside the Royal Melbourne Hospital where Mitchell was taken to, had been dating him at the time.

In the years before his first shooting, Mitchell had been linked to gangster Nik Radev, who was killed in 2003 during Melbourne's infamous Underbelly War.

Detectives had suspected Mitchell of killing Mark Mallia during the same period, but he was never charged and other men were eventually convicted of the murder.
