The super-spreader party in Melbourne is the biggest recorded outbreak since the beginning of the Covid pandemic, during which cases were rare. Experts have for months warned Australia faced a horror flu season this winter as people stop social distancing as Covid eases. Fears were particularly high for children as they were not exposed to the flu the past two years and would have far less immunity than usual. World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza deputy director Ian Barr said it was the flu's first major appearance since 2020. '[The resurgence] is likely to affect a lot more kids, that's for sure, whether it's any worse or not remains to be seen,' he told 3AW radio. 'Certainly been a big upswing of influenza in Melbourne and the east coast of Australia over the past six weeks. 'There's a difference between this flu and other flus — in young children these symptoms will persist, you'll have fever, cough, muscle soreness and fatigue.'
