Ashley Biden tested positive for COVID-19, the first lady's office said Wednesday, which will prevent the first daughter from traveling with her mother, First Lady Jill Biden, to Ecuador, Panama and Costa Rica.

It marked the second time in weeks Ashley Biden had to scrap plans to travel internationally with the first lady, as she was a close contact to someone who tested positive for COVID in advance of Dr. Biden's trip to Romania, Slovakia - and ultimately Ukraine.

That trip occurred just days after the White House Correspondents' Dinner, where a number of attendees tested positive for the virus in the weekend's aftermath.

Ashley Biden was spotted at several of the WHCD parties. While the dinner had strict COVID testing protocols, not every event did.

The first lady's spokesman Michael LaRosa said Ashley Biden wasn't considered a close contact to the president or first lady.

President Joe Biden is departing Thursday for his first trip to Asia as president, traveling to South Korea and Japan.

Dr. Biden was leaving Wednesday for a six-day trip to Ecuador, Panama, and Costa Rica ahead of the U.S.-hosted Summit of the Americas, where she will visit with school children and meet with dignitaries.

The first lady hitched a ride to Joint Base Andrews with President Joe Biden, who was receiving a hurricane briefing there.

The first couple exchanged a presidential goodbye. The president leaves Thursday on a five-day trip to Asia.

This is Jill Biden's second international trip this month after she visited Romania, Slovakia and Ukraine.

She's traveling to the area ahead of June's Summit of the Americas, which is being held in Los Angeles and faces a potentially humiliating blow to the administration.

The event, which brings leaders of North, South, and Central America, as well as the Caribbean, is facing a boycott from some nations if the meeting excludes Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua.

The president of Mexico has said he won't come and other nations are threatening to follow his lead.

The empty seats would be an embarassment to the Biden White House.
